Ghibli Park between Tokyo and Kyoto: stop on the way, stay overnight, or take a day trip?

You can visit on the travel day, stay in Nagoya the night before, or go there and back from Kyoto. Which one works depends on your ticket, your entry time, where you sleep and what you do with your bags.

Quick answer

Ghibli Park is not in central Nagoya. From Nagoya Station it is about another 45 minutes by subway and Linimo, so reaching Nagoya is not the same as reaching the park. There are three realistic ways to fit it in:

  • A. Stop on the way (Tokyo → park → Kyoto, one day). Works if you can leave Tokyo early, your Grand Warehouse slot is not too early, and your bags travel separately. With a Premium ticket you also have to reach the park before 12:00, whatever your Grand Warehouse time is.
  • B. Night in Nagoya first. The calmest morning, at the cost of one more hotel change. It does not have to add a night to your trip. It can replace one in Tokyo or Kyoto.
  • C. Day trip from Kyoto. Keeps one hotel and leaves your bags in Kyoto, at the cost of a Shinkansen round trip and a longer day.

If you do not have tickets yet, get the tickets first and book hotels and trains afterwards. Tickets cannot be changed once bought.

Before choosing a route

Check these five things first. Each one changes which option works.

  1. Do you already have tickets? Ghibli Park needs an advance reservation for a specific date, and tickets are not sold at the park. Bookings cannot be refunded or changed: not the date, entry time, ticket type or number of people.
  2. Which ticket type? The Standard day pass covers Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse, Mononoke Village and Valley of Witches. The Premium day pass covers all five areas, including Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest, and the buildings inside them.
  3. What is your Grand Warehouse time? It is the only area with an assigned entry time. You can enter up to one hour after your slot, but not earlier. Other areas have no set time but close to new visitors at 4:30 p.m., and the park closes at 5 p.m.
  4. Is the park open that day, and from when? Weekdays are 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and weekends and holidays are 9 a.m.–5 p.m. The 9 a.m. Grand Warehouse slot only exists on 9 a.m. days. Closures fall mostly on Tuesdays, but not only on Tuesdays. Early December 2026 has a longer closure, for example. Always check the official Park Calendar.
  5. Who and what is coming with you? Everyone in your party has to enter with the person named on the tickets, and that person may be asked for ID such as a passport. Large bags and suitcases are not allowed in the park.

None of these is the right answer for everyone. If you only want the Grand Warehouse and a little more, a same-day stop can be enough. If you want to see as much as possible, an early start from Nagoya gives you more time in the park.

Option A: stop on the way

The idea: check out in Tokyo, ride the Shinkansen to Nagoya, spend the middle of the day at the park, then continue to Kyoto in the evening.

How the day fits together

These are planning ranges built from official journey times, not a timetable. Look up your actual trains for your date.

  1. Tokyo hotel

To Tokyo or Shinagawa Station. Depends on your hotel; allow time for tickets, food and the platform.

  2. Nozomi Shinkansen to Nagoya≈ 1 h 30 min

  3. Change at Nagoya Station+ 15–30 min

From the Shinkansen to the Higashiyama subway line, plus waiting. Our planning margin, not an official figure.

  4. Higashiyama Line + Linimo to Ai-Chikyuhaku Kinen Koen≈ 45 min

The park is just outside Exit 2.

  5. Walk to Ghibli's Grand Warehouse≈ 400 m

  6. Grand Warehouse

Roughly 3 to 4 hours after leaving a central Tokyo hotel.

Taken together, plan on roughly 3 to 4 hours from a central Tokyo hotel to the Grand Warehouse door. Leaving your hotel around 7 a.m. puts you at the park somewhere around 10 to 11 a.m. A 10 a.m. slot leaves you almost no margin. An 11 a.m. or later slot is more forgiving.

Afterwards: the park closes at 5 p.m. From Nagoya, the Nozomi to Kyoto takes about 40 minutes. That is the difference between JR Central’s Tokyo–Kyoto and Tokyo–Nagoya times. Expect to reach Kyoto in the evening. How late depends on when you leave the park.

Book in this order

  1. Park tickets, with a Grand Warehouse slot that fits the arrival range above.
  2. Luggage delivery to your Kyoto hotel (see luggage), or confirmed storage in Nagoya.
  3. Shinkansen seats. If any bag measures more than 160 cm in total (length + width + height), reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.

Skip this option if

  • Your only available slot is 9 or 10 a.m. and you would be leaving from Tokyo.
  • You have Premium and cannot realistically reach the park before noon.
  • You cannot separate yourself from your suitcases for the day.
  • You want to see all five areas without rushing.

Option B: night in Nagoya first

The idea: travel from Tokyo to Nagoya the evening before, sleep there, go to the park in the morning, and continue to Kyoto afterwards.

  • Where to stay: a hotel near Nagoya Station or along the Higashiyama Line toward Fujigaoka keeps the morning simple, because that line takes you to the Linimo.
  • What it costs: one more hotel change. Treat it as a swap, not automatically an extra night. If you move one Tokyo or Kyoto night to Nagoya, the total number of nights stays the same.
  • Luggage: ask the Nagoya hotel whether it will keep your bags on the visit day after check-out, or send them on to Kyoto. Each hotel sets its own rules.
  • Why choose it: you can take the earliest Grand Warehouse slot, collect a Premium wristband with time to spare, and reach Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest before the late-afternoon crowds. The park expects those two areas to be very crowded after 4 p.m.

Book in this order

  1. Park tickets.
  2. A Nagoya hotel with free cancellation, until you are sure of the rest.
  3. Trains, and luggage arrangements with the hotel.

Skip this option if

  • Changing hotels one more time costs you more energy than an early start would.
  • You only want a short visit to the Grand Warehouse.

Option C: day trip from Kyoto

The idea: keep your Kyoto hotel, go to the park and back in one day, and leave your bags in Kyoto.

  1. Kyoto hotel

    To Kyoto Station.

  2. Nozomi Shinkansen to Nagoya≈ 40 min

The difference between JR Central's Tokyo–Kyoto and Tokyo–Nagoya times.

  3. Change at Nagoya Station+ 15–30 min

Our planning margin, not an official figure.

  4. Higashiyama Line + Linimo to Ai-Chikyuhaku Kinen Koen≈ 45 min

  5. Ghibli Park

Roughly 2 to 2½ hours door to door. The same again on the way back after the park closes at 5 p.m.

  • What it costs: a Shinkansen round trip for each person. Compare it with the cost of a Nagoya hotel for your party. Look up fares for your date on the official online reservation service.
  • Luggage: nothing to arrange beyond your Kyoto hotel.
  • The day ends late: after the park closes at 5 p.m., you still have a couple of hours of travel back.

Skip this option if

  • You have Premium, want a morning Grand Warehouse slot, and would rather not leave Kyoto very early.
  • The round-trip fare for your group costs more than a night in Nagoya and you would prefer the slower day.

Tickets affect your whole itinerary

Buy from the official overseas purchase page. It links to the two sales sites it uses for overseas buyers, Lawson Ticket and Klook. Day passes go on sale two months ahead, on the 10th at 2 p.m. Japan time. For example, December 2026 tickets go on sale on 10 October 2026.

  • Prices (as of 2 October 2026, per adult, including tax): Premium 7,300 yen on weekdays and 7,800 yen on weekends and holidays. Standard 3,300 yen on weekdays and 3,800 yen on weekends and holidays. Children aged 4–12 pay half, and under-4s are free. A service charge is added when tickets are issued.
  • Before you pay: check the month and date, ticket type, number of people and Grand Warehouse time. A wrong choice cannot be changed afterwards.
  • Resale tickets: the park says tickets that appear to come from auctions or other unofficial channels will be refused at the gate.

Go to the official ticket page

If the ticket you want is sold out

  • Take Standard instead of Premium. You still get the Grand Warehouse, Mononoke Village and Valley of Witches. You miss Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest. Some buildings in Valley of Witches sell a limited number of same-day tickets.
  • Change the date, if your trip can move. Check the other dates you could make on the calendar.
  • Look at the ticket plans with accommodation listed on the official ticket page. They are sold through travel agencies such as JTB. Compare what is included and the price before you pay.
  • Skip the paid areas. Some Ghibli-themed spots in the surrounding Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park can be visited without a ticket. You can also drop the Nagoya stop and keep your Tokyo–Kyoto plan as it was.

Until your park tickets are confirmed, avoid prepaying hotels or trains that you cannot cancel because of the park.

What to do with your luggage

Ghibli Park has no storage of its own and does not allow large bags or suitcases. The surrounding Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park has a limited number of coin lockers and a cloakroom at the North Gate Information Center. The park itself recommends arranging storage at your hotel before you arrive. Do not count on finding a free locker.

Send it to your next hotel

Fits Option A and the reverse direction. Same-day Tokyo⇄Kyoto/Osaka delivery exists. On the standard plans you drop off by 10 a.m. and the bag is delivered by 8 p.m. (or 6 p.m. on the faster plan). It only works if you stay at a partner hotel at the delivery end. Ordinary courier delivery is a separate service, so ask the counter for the delivery date before you hand over your bag.

Ask the hotel to keep it

Fits Options B and C. Check whether the hotel holds bags after check-out, until what time, and whether it can send them on.

Store it in Nagoya

Fits Option A. We have not verified current locker or storage availability around Nagoya Station. Nothing guarantees a free space when you arrive, so have a fallback.

The service and rules we checked

The same-day service we checked is LUGGAGE EXPRESS, run by JTB. Fees are 13,200 yen per item for delivery by 8 p.m. and 16,500 yen for delivery by 6 p.m., as of 2 October 2026. Bags can be up to 200 cm in total dimensions and 30 kg. You can drop off at Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka Station counters or at partner hotels, and delivery is to partner hotels only. Nagoya is not a drop-off or delivery point. See the service’s own page.

On the Shinkansen: bags of 161–250 cm in total need a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area. This costs nothing extra, but bringing such a bag without the reservation costs a 1,000 yen fee. Bags over 250 cm cannot be brought on board. JR Central luggage rules.

Before you book

  1. The date is not a closure day on the Park Calendar, and you know whether the park opens at 9 or 10 a.m.
  2. You know which buildings matter to you, and so whether you need Premium or Standard.
  3. You have picked a route (A, B or C) and a Grand Warehouse slot that fits it. With Premium, you can reach the park before 12:00.
  4. On the payment screen, the month, date, ticket type, number of people and time are all correct.
  5. The person named on the tickets is travelling and will carry ID.
  6. You know where your suitcases will be during the visit.
  7. If any bag is over 160 cm in total, your Shinkansen seat has an oversized baggage area.
  8. Hotels and trains are booked after the tickets, or are cancellable until then.

FAQ

Is it different if I start from Tokyo or from Kyoto?

Yes. From Tokyo, the Shinkansen alone takes about 1 hour 30 minutes before you even start the 45-minute trip from Nagoya Station. From Kyoto, the Shinkansen part is about 40 minutes. A morning Grand Warehouse slot is much easier to reach from Kyoto or from a night in Nagoya than on a Tokyo departure day.

Do I need to stay overnight in Nagoya?

No. Option A and Option C both work without a Nagoya night if your entry time and luggage plan fit them. A night in Nagoya mainly buys you an easy morning and more time in the park. It is worth it if you want an early slot, a relaxed Premium day, or a long visit.

Can I bring my suitcase to the park?

No. Large bags and suitcases are not allowed in Ghibli Park, and the park has no storage. Lockers in the surrounding park are limited. Send your bags ahead or leave them at a hotel. See What to do with your luggage.

My Grand Warehouse slot is in the afternoon. Can I arrive in the afternoon?

With Standard, you can arrive later as long as you enter the Grand Warehouse within an hour of your slot. Remember that the other areas stop admitting visitors at 4:30 p.m. With Premium, no. Wristband pickup must be done by 12:00 p.m., so you need to be at the park before noon even if your Grand Warehouse slot is later.

Can I do it in the other direction, Kyoto → Ghibli Park → Tokyo?

Yes, the same three options apply in reverse. The timings are not the same, though. You leave Kyoto in the morning with a shorter first leg. After the park you face about 45 minutes back to Nagoya plus about 1 hour 30 minutes to Tokyo, so you arrive late in the evening. The same-day luggage service also runs from Kyoto to Tokyo, again only to partner hotels.

I couldn’t get the ticket I wanted. What now?

Decide what matters most: the specific buildings, the date, or keeping your route. Then consider Standard instead of Premium, another date, an accommodation plan listed on the official ticket page, or skipping the paid areas. See If the ticket you want is sold out. Don’t buy resale tickets, which can be refused at the gate.
