Nagoya Station luggage storage: lockers that fit a suitcase, and what to do if they are full
Nagoya Station has two sets of coin lockers, the JR station's and the subway's. Both have sizes for a suitcase, and neither can promise you a free one. Here is what each offers, and what to do when they are full.

Quick answer
- Full-sized suitcase: use a large locker in the subway part of the station, in the Sakura-dori Line area on B2F, which is 800 yen a day at the block nearest the Shinkansen gates. The JR station also has extra-large lockers at a few locations.
- Carry-on case or backpack: medium (700 yen) or small (500 yen) subway lockers.
- Check when you can get your bag back. Lockers can only be opened while the station is open, and the subway lockers have a 3-day limit.
- If they are full: try the next block of lockers, then your hotel, then sending the bag on. Nothing guarantees a free locker.
We have not been able to verify a staffed baggage counter at the station, so we do not list one here.
Lockers, hotel storage or forwarding?
- A coin locker at the station suits you if you will come back through Nagoya Station the same day, or within a few days. It is the usual choice for a Ghibli Park stop on the way between Tokyo and Kyoto.
- Your hotel suits you if you are sleeping in Nagoya. Ask whether it keeps bags after check-out, until when, and whether it can send them on. Each hotel sets its own rules.
- Sending the bag on by courier suits you if you will not need it that night. Delivery dates depend on the company, the route and the cut-off time, so ask for the delivery date before you hand it over.
- Same-day delivery exists between Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka, but Nagoya is not a drop-off or delivery point for the service we checked. See For a Ghibli Park stop.
Verified storage options at Nagoya Station
There are two separate operators: one for the subway station and one for the JR station. Their fees and rules are not the same.
Subway lockers: Sakura-dori Line, B2F
Run by the Nagoya Transportation Development Organization. Its own guide calls these the lockers nearest the Shinkansen.
- Where: five blocks, A to E, in the Sakura-dori Line area on B2F. Block A is near Exit 13, at the bottom of the escalator down to the Esca underground shopping mall, close to the Shinkansen gates. Use the locker map to find each block.
- Sizes and fees at block A: small 500 yen (104 lockers), medium 700 yen (62), large 800 yen (28). The operator says a large locker fits a full-sized suitcase and a medium one fits a carry-on suitcase. Inside, the lockers are about 340–430 mm wide and 570–660 mm deep, and a large one is about 810–900 mm high. Sizes vary by unit.
- How you are charged: per locker, per day. Under the operator’s terms, a day ends at 1 a.m. If you go over, the extra fee is shown on the locker screen.
- Time limit: up to 3 days, counting the day you start. After that the operator removes your things and keeps them at its office, and you pay the fees to get them back.
- When you can open it: only while the subway station is open.
- Payment: IC card or cash. Blocks A, B, C and E accept IC cards. The only coin exchange machine is at block A, so carry 100-yen coins.
- Not allowed: cash and valuables, dangerous items, animals, and food or anything that spoils.
- Booking: we did not find a way to reserve these lockers.

JR station coin lockers
Run by Nagoya Station Development, part of the JR Central group. Their page is in Japanese.
- Where: 12 locations around the JR station. Extra-large lockers are listed at No. 1 (Bus Terminal South), Nos. 7 and 8 (Hirokoji Exit) and No. 11 (Gate Tower, B1F). Most other locations have large, medium and small lockers. See the JR station locker list and map.
- Payment: e-money or cash at every location.
- When you can open it: only while the station’s entrance doors are open.
- Fees, inside sizes and time limits: not published on the page. Check the screen on the locker before you pay.
- Free lockers right now: the operator links to a live availability page (in Japanese). Not every locker is covered.
If the first option is full
- Try the next block of the same operator. At the subway lockers, block A fills up quickly. The nearest alternative is block B: from the locker with the koala design, take the stairs on the left, and block B is ahead on your left before FASHION ONE. The operator’s own guide says blocks C, D and E are often free.
- Try the other operator. If the subway lockers are full, look for a JR station locker, and the other way round.
- Use a hotel. If you are staying in Nagoya that night, or can reach your hotel first, ask it to keep your bags.
- Change the plan rather than carry the bag. A night in Nagoya or a day trip from Kyoto means your suitcase stays at a hotel.
Do not plan on the lockers at Ghibli Park as a backup. The surrounding Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park has only a limited number of them.
For a Ghibli Park stop
Ghibli Park does not allow large bags or suitcases, and it has no storage of its own. If you stop on the way between Tokyo and Kyoto:
- Leave your bags at Nagoya Station when you change from the Shinkansen, then collect them on the way back. The subway lockers on the Sakura-dori Line are the ones closest to the Shinkansen gates.
- The park is about 45 minutes from Nagoya Station each way by Higashiyama Line and Linimo. Leave time to collect your bags before your next train.
- If any bag measures 161–250 cm in total (length + width + height), reserve a Shinkansen seat with an oversized baggage area. Bringing one without that reservation costs a 1,000 yen fee, and bags over 250 cm cannot go on board. JR Central luggage rules.
- If you would rather not handle your bags at all, LUGGAGE EXPRESS (run by JTB) delivers between Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka on the same day, to partner hotels only, and priced per bag. Details are in our Ghibli Park guide.
Before leaving your bags
- Note or photograph the locker number and block, and keep the receipt or the IC card you used. It is your key.
- Check that the station will still be open when you come back for your bag.
- At the subway lockers, collect your bag within 3 days, counting the day you start.
- Keep your passport, cash and valuables with you.
- If your suitcase is over 160 cm in total, your Shinkansen seat has an oversized baggage area.
